Probably a necessary response to the slew of 3G devices being released
by the major carriers other than T-Mobile in the U.S..

I think that besides price, one of the reasons the iPhone didn't get off
to a good start in the GSM countries with highly developed 3G networks
was the lack of 3G capability.
