I do those things from the phone, itself, but I'm on Alltel who doesn't
hobble up useful features like Verizon and some others do. I can open a
picture I like, any time, click up the options and tell the phone to use
this picture as desktop background with a click. Same is true for MP3
files of sound effects as ringtones. There's a menu selection to make the
currently selected MP3 into a ringtone. My current main ringer is a really
LOUD, old fashioned English 2-ring real bells. It is so loud it sometimes
makes me jump when the phone is in my pocket...(c;

I have the phonecam set to store the pictures straight to the external
memory card, so I simply move the microSD to an adapter and plug it into
the SD slot on the computer to move files off it. I understand this is not
permitted with some greedy bastard carriers, though, it's function removed.
