I think that they are genuinely clueless and just parrot what they
have been told to say. I think very few of them have the inclination
to play with their phones or to investigate what they have been told.
Most probably do not even know that they are lying.

Unfortunately I am stuck with Verizon for the next year or so and I
really don't do much tethering. I don't need EVDO just to SSH into
one of my servers -- and Verizon has not caught on yet that I do
infrequently use data.
