FWIW, I agree with Todd. If you aren't going for long enough, or
expecting to use the phone enough, to make it worth finding local phone
service, the iPhone with the AT&T SIM is at least as good for travel as
anything else (AT&T does have a $4/month add-on to get cheaper roaming rates
which you might want to add for the duration of the trip). And if you
do want to use a local SIM, an unlocked iPhone is about as good as it gets.
If you think you'd like to use a local SIM but don't want to unlock
the iPhone, however, the only thing I'd point out is that, in addition
to 900 MHz and 1800 MHz GSM I find it occasionally advantageous to
have a phone which supports the 2100 MHz UMTS band. I'm pretty sure
the Blackberry Storm supports that band, but I think the US T-Mobile
G1 doesn't (the European versions of the same phone do). If you'd
really prefer having the G1 I wouldn't let this stop you, but if
the choices were otherwise about equal to you I'd pick the phone
with 2100 MHz support.
