There should be no problem doing this. It's a simple phone number swap
with the only added step being the "new" number is the one being ported
in. Just make sure you have a copy of your Verizon bill with you when
you actually port in.

And I always recommend porting in to ANY carrier this way. Some third
party agents don't want to do it because it messes with their
commisioning. So I also recommend dealing only with actual corporate
stores.
