Actually, a correction on this: we've never known for sure if tethering
was REALLY allowed with the $15 plan. Originally the answer was yes,
then it was a stern no (with Sprint cracking down on it for a while),
then an occasional "yes" through unofficial channels.
Then finally, the answer seemed to be that Sprint would look the other
way as long as you didn't make it blatantly obvious that you were
tethering, and downloading multiple gigabytes of data every month.
In any case, we do know that for most 1xRTT phones, Sprint couldn't do
anything to prevent tethering without completely shutting off your
Vision access. So it was on by default.
This changed with most EVDO capable phones, which now send different NAI
logins depending on what type of connection you want. Unless hacked, an
EVDO phone will the network what you're trying to do.
