Say goodbye to Alltel and unlimited internet to your phone...

Maybe the service is great were you live, but in Minnesota, it
pretty much sucks.
I got my parents a pre-paid Alltel phone. On a vacation to
Southern California, the phone rarely worked. No matter what
number you dialed, you got a recording that either said "dial 1
before the number and try again" or "can't complete the call".
The phone's service got terminated the first time when Alltel
bought Midwest Wireless. As part of the deal, Alltel claims
they had to terminate the accounts of all their customers in
the region. So we plopped down a bunch more cash (about 8X what
it cost previously), and got it re-activated for a year. That
only took about an hour of waiting around at the local Alltel
store while employees that clearly had no training or knowlege
sat on hold as they made phone calls to various other offices
to ask how to do things.
A month later, they shut it off again. This time they had no
explanation for why it was terminated, and after more hassles,
they re-activated. So the phone is _supposed_ to work, but a
recent trip to Minneapolis, the phone could receive calls, but
couldn't make calls -- all outgoing calls just got a busy
signal. Incoming calls worked fine.
OTOH, my Verizon phone "just works". Everywhere. Always.

No, it was brutal while it lasted.

In Minnesota, everybody I know is saying "good riddance."

This is all just speculation at this point. No talks are even rumored
between boards yet, and frankly I doubt the FCC would let it go
throught without TONS of divestitures where they overlap (which is all
over the place).
Once again Larry, you are yelling the sky is falling. How's Chicken

Providing phones that work is "pandering"?

Trust me, Alltel CS reps are unhappy with former MWW customers. We
weren't happy to take them, and even today they are crass and vulgar
as Alltel does NOT pander to them the way MWW did.

I realize your reading comprehension might not be up to snuff,
so I'll try to simplify it: my parent's were never MWW
customers. They were Alltel customers. They started with
Alltel, and they're still with Alltel -- despite the phone
having been shut off twice and service that doesn't work when
you need it. I doubt they'll continue to be Alltel customers
after the current minutes expire.

Yes, I've read the speculations, but it was not officially announced
until earlier today. I still will await actual approval from the FCC,
and will wait with baited breath to see if it acutally goes through.
We'll see. It could be shut down by the FCC after all, and there WILL
be tons of divestitures.

Yes, I know the other poster was referring to Alltel.
However, If you are going to provide MWW service, then you need to
provide it. Otherwise, you need to give them to another company.
Yes, some people are rude but it not excuse to provide them with bad
service or disconnect service if that is the case.
