Default MPT Can't Locate KRZR K1

About a year ago, I bought a KRZR K1 and downloaded the 4.5.1 MPT
software to give me the KRZR skin. Everything has been working just
fine. Today, I opened MPT and it offered me some updates in ver. 4.
I let it update, then it asked me if I wanted to get the ver 5 update
for my "new" phone. I did, and now I can't connect with MPT no matter
what I do. I have tried a Windows System Restore. I have uninstalled
MPT and run the Motorola drivertool.exe and the Motorola End User
driver installation file. I have repeated these steps. Nothing seems
to work. The KRZR works fine with my HP laptop, just not this Dell
desktop. Something I notice when I do a reboot is that the system
waits for unpacking some files (or words to that effect) while closing
down. I think it relates back to the ver. 5 attempted update. I also
get a hardware installation error when I plug the phone in, and it
goes through all the identification steps.

Right now I am trying ver. 4.5.1 with no updates. Still no joy. Note
that I have no problem accessing the phone memory card with a file
manager, so at least the computer recognizes the phone though the USB
port.

My guess would be that the comm port number assigned to the USB is higher
than 9.
You might find that there are several USB modems "available" on your
system, but only one will actually respond to diagnostics or commands.

Some of this is caused by plugging into different USB ports on the PC, some
is caused by ... I don't know.

If you disconnect the phone and delete them all, when you reconnect, it
should create a low numbered comm port for the interface.

The support site has changed a lot since I last looked, but there used to
be articles about this problem on the forums in the past.

Thanks Clarence. I did find the Avanquest document, but it really
didn't help much. The only modem I have been able to install manually
is something called, "Motorola Comp Modem." I know that's not the
correct one for the KRZR K1, but having trouble finding the correct
one. I wish I knew the file name the program needs so I could find it
and point to it. The Motorola Comp Modem was assigned to Com 1, which
is in use 24/7 by my weather station. Don't know why Windows isn't
smart enough to know that.
