And I'm not even about to use MS Outhouse!!!

But MPT lets me add ringtones and wallpaper as well as editing my
rather extensive contact list. Also, I can retrieve any pics I take
with the crappy phone cam. Not very many functions, but then I got it
off E-Bay and didn't pay a lot.

MPT would really be great if it would let me delete ringtones and pics
that came already installed on my phone.

I do those things from the phone, itself, but I'm on Alltel who doesn't
hobble up useful features like Verizon and some others do. I can open a
picture I like, any time, click up the options and tell the phone to use
this picture as desktop background with a click. Same is true for MP3
files of sound effects as ringtones. There's a menu selection to make the
currently selected MP3 into a ringtone. My current main ringer is a really
LOUD, old fashioned English 2-ring real bells. It is so loud it sometimes
makes me jump when the phone is in my pocket...(c;

I have the phonecam set to store the pictures straight to the external
memory card, so I simply move the microSD to an adapter and plug it into
the SD slot on the computer to move files off it. I understand this is not
permitted with some greedy bastard carriers, though, it's function removed.

Ah yes, data portability.

I still haven't gotten around to massaging the contact info into my
N810. These tablets are great laptop replacements when on the road.
Love 'em.

That wouldn't be true. There are other databases that it can use.
Just being able to store and access the contacts in some database, even
it's own copy of MSAccess, is more helpful than an obex copy.

In the case of moving all contacts from a Motorola to a new Nokia, I used
Outlook Express .wab as an interchange format, although I had never
configured OE on this machine. It was a file format that both sync
programs used.

I thought I liked Nokia PCSuite better than MPT for synchronization, but
that's it. MPT is much more fully featured for working with the telephone.

Depends on whether you're a user or a super-duper user ...

That's cool. What page of the user manual was that on? Missed it.

Section 4.4 of the "mobile PhoneTools User Guide", page 37/113.

I had a Motorola, not mine, so I didn't want to "sync" with my email.
I wanted to copy the contacts to the replacement Nokia, also not mine.

I brought up both programs, linked to their respective phones via
Bluetooth, and looked at the available formats.

MPT - PhoneBook - File - New
Text file with delimiters
DBASE III or DBASE IV
BVRP Phonebook (DBF and PBK) {MSAccess/Excel compatible}
VCard (VCF)
Exchange Phonebook (PAB)
Outlook Contacts folder (PST)
Outlook Express address book (WAB)
Lotus Notes (NSF)

You can synchronize a compatible Nokia phone with the following PC PIM
applications:
Microsoft Outlook 2000, 2002, 2003 and 2007
Microsoft Outlook Express / Windows Address Book
Microsoft Windows Vista Contacts
Lotus Notes 5.x, 6.x and 7.0
Lotus Organizer 5.x and 6.x

At the time of this transfer, I thought it was odd that a readily
accessible database or flat file weren't in the Nokia options, but Nokia
isn't working with data, it's synching with an application. Later, I
realized that reduces the flexibility.

MPT lets you bring up two panels in the Phonebook. On the left is the
database of your choice from above, on the right is the phone contents.
You can sync, drag, modify, or delete on either side, without immediate
impact on the other side. (screen shot on page 44 of the guide.)

When MPT does sync, the rules are clear, and it prompts for conflict
resolution.

Nokia has no individual contact flexibility that I can find. The sync has
rules, but I don't think they apply the way that I want them to.

Clarence;

Thank you very much for taking the time to outline your experience with
the two proggies. Until now, I'd given up on trying to convert MPT's
calendaring data to something more open (i.e. ics). Looks like I have a
chance now.

best,
-Craig
