I found a partial solution. Everything works fine when I select the
V3am model, but the selection process has to be done each time I run
MPT since the V3a isn't automatically recognized as a V3am.
It's totally inexcusable that an active model such as the V3a isn't
listed.

Larc;
MPT is finicky to say the least but, I found the company's support to be
responsive when I had problems. Try their forum

A non-standard selection stayed sticky for me.
What does vary is how the phone is detected if you move USB ports, or maybe
the port where you plug in a Bluetooth dongle.
Have you done LiveUpdate to the latest version? I find it hard to discover
what the latest version is by looking at the BVRP web site or forums.

Thanks very much, Craig. I posted my question there. From looking
through some of the topics, it appears I'm not the only one with V3a
questions.

Can someone tell me what the MPT will do for a miniUSB-connected phone that
just plugging it into a Windows box will not?
I have the MotoROKR Z6m and just plug it into my WinXP box's powerful
Staples-branded USB hub to charge it and move files on and off it.
What else can I do with it if I buy MPT??
I double clicked on a Jimmy Buffett song on the phone from Windows
Explorer, Winamp booted and is playing it as I typed this over the USB
cable. I didn't know it would do that. From Bluetooth OBEX, I have to
move the file from the phone to the Nokia N800 Linux tablet before it will
play on the tablet....hmm..
The phone charges faster from the Staples USB hub than it does from its own
stupid power supply!

There may be other things but the "big ticket" thing for me was entering
the names and phone numbers of about thirty contacts using a real
keyboard. Once upon a time, I did this using the phone's keypad, an
experience I don't *ever* want to repeat!

Yup.
This and calendaring are why I bought MPT. Unfortunately, unless one
uses MS Outlook stuff, MPT's usefulness is pretty limited.

I use MPT and it's good but for me saving calenders and phone books
BitPim works much better than MPT does.

Hmm...that alone answer my silly question. Thanks.
Alltel put my contact list on a floppy disk long ago and has burned it into
a CDR more recently while swapping it from old phones to new phones.
Too bad the phone doesn't support the HID protocol so I could pair it with
my Nokia folding BT tablet I use with the N800. That would make text entry
smooth as silk.
