Default Charging rate

I have a RAZR V3 telephone and I note on the charger that the output is
5V-550mA. I recently acquired a Garmin Nuvi 350 peronal travel assistant (GPS)
and note that the charger for it has an output of 5V- 1A. Both have a mini USB
plug. It would be convenient to use the Garmin charger for everything if its
safe. Will I damage my telephone by using the 1 A charger??

Most likely, the phone won't charge with your Garmin charger because
Motorola uses non-standard wiring in the USB connector to supply
control information to the phone.

If the voltage is stable over the load range, I don't see any problem.

OTOH, I have seen power supplies (wall warts) rated at 12VDC that
actually delivered something like 18VDC unloaded. I'm sure it worked
with whatever it was intended to power but I wouldn't plug just any
random gadget into that wall wart!

Got a Nuvi 250 myself. The car charger works fine with my V3. It charges
faster, too, based on wholly unscientific measurements.

The reverse is also true: you can charge the Nuvi with the Motorola wall
charger or PC USB cable.

Great -

Thanks very much! I was hoping to hear from someone who had first hand
experience. This save me from having to acquire another charger since I lost the
one that I had for the telephone and had to rely on my remembering to charge up
before I left the house. I've now tried it and you are right -- it works great!
