Motorola has updated their USB drivers numerous times and if you install
an old version of MPT, you'll get an antique version of the drivers.
Get and install a new version of the drivers and see if that fixes
things. Even if you install a newer version of MPT, you should still
re-install the latest drivers afterward.
The only place I know for sure to get the latest drivers is
https://developer.motorola.com/docstools/USB_Drivers/
but that's Motorola's developer Web site and requires that you
"register" (just an email address) to use it. There are probably other
places to find them.

I'm no computer newbie.
I have 2KPro and use XP daily and overall over many years, 98SE has stood me
much more steadfastly that either; especially XP. I know all about various
patches, have applied those that I needed.

I also know that MPT versions are tailored toward different carriers and I'm
fortunate in that I don't really need to use it and that in the UK, I mainly
use Bluetooth to store/update/exchange contacts and/or files. No need to
use MPT.

Well, I did uninstall the old version of MPT and installed the version
that Motorola sent me the link to. It is version 4.5.6a by Avanquest
Software 8/17/2007. Still the same result as with the CD version that
came with the cellphone. As soon as I plug the USB cable into the
phone, I get the above mentioned error message about the USB Device
Not Recognized. I called T-Mobile but they say they are unable to help
since it is not a T-Mobile phone. As for the battery, the place that I
got it from is sending a new battery. That is no longer a concern. But
I am completely perplexed by the computer not recognizing the
cellphone. Regardless of which USB port I use, I still get the same
error message. Any other suggestions???

Jeem;
Did you try the official support forum for MPT
<http://www.bvrpforums.com/motorola/> yet? My phone had connectivity
problems (forget which) about a year ago. I searched their forums,
found several similar complaints and followed the responses from the
support people. Been fine since.
Fwiw, Motorola doesn't write MPT. It's an app from Avanquest. They
have offices in California but, from talking to their support, I'd say
that, for the mpt at least, coding & support is done from France.

Sorry, no.
I did not put my phone on charge last night. The charge indicator seems
be saying 3/4 charged. I'm guessing that a charge should be good for
144 hours (four days) at idle only.

Just to muddy the waters a little more, I get that message when I plug
in my V195, but it still works with MPT just fine.
The phone presents a handful of different devices through the USB
interface and one (or more) isn't recognized, but the modem shows up in
the device manager and whatever else MPT needs must be there too.
Have you tried downloading and installing the USB drivers from
Motorola's Web site? I always replace whatever comes with MPT whenever I
update it. I think I have 4.5.6a right now.

I found W98SE to be far more reliable than anything that preceded it but
I still needed to reboot fairly frequently. With W/2K I didn't need to
reboot so frequently. With W/XP I let my system run for a week or two
between reboots. It's still not perfect but Windows has come a long
way!! I hear really bad things about W/Vista and I no intention of
using it!

You've heard correctly and are wise to avoid Vista.

I discovered that when I'm in a "fringe" area and tend to lose signal
frequently, my battery will only last a couple of days, but in a strong signal
areas it will last a week! Seems that when you lose a signal it begins searching
for a signal and will simply run itself down searching. Took a while to figure
that out, but it works. One of the places I hunt is in a "dead" area in west
Texas. I can go there with a full charge on Friday and by Sunday my battery will
be nearly dead if I don't put it on a charger. Lasts a week in Dallas.
