mobile PhoneTools trouble
Hello Everyone,
I am having trouble with mobile PhoneTools. I just recently (March 14)
bought 2 (two) Motorola V3 Razr cellphones and installed mobile
PhoneTools on my computer. I am running Windows XP. I am having
trouble getting the computer to recognize the cellphone. I have tried
both cellphones and the computer will not recognize either cellphone.
I have even got the mobile PhoneTools latest update, but with the same
results. I have tried at least 4 times to get this to work, by
uninstalling and then reinstalling mobile PhoneTools. I have tried
different USB ports. But the computer will not recognize the
cellphone. I get a little popup message in the bottom right corner of
the screen which says: "USB Device Not Recognized. One of the USB
devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and Windows does
not recognize it. For assistance in solving this problem, click this
message." After clicking the message, all I really get is a window
saying it is an unknown device and then at the bottom it says try
reconnecting the device. Has anyone had the same experience? Or does
anyone know how to or have any ideas how to resolve this problem?
Thank you very much!!!!

Can't help on the particulars but the official forum for MPT
<http://www.bvrpforums.com/motorola/> has helped me in the past.

I had the same problem. I bought copies of Motorola Phone Tools on CD
from Amazon. When they didn't work, I called Motorola Technical Support
and explained my problem. The phone number was in my phone's
instruction book. They gave me a temporary URL from which I downloaded
a version that DOES support the RAZR. You need at least Version 4.56 or
later.
The version I purchased on CD did not upgrade to this version. You
might wish to try it however. The upgrade has to be done one version at
a time; 4.0 to 4.1, 4.1 to 4.2, . . . . It DID NOT work for me! YMMV.

I think I will try that since the version I have is 3.28. I hope this
works out for me too.

That does look a little old. Is there a date on it? Is it a real
antique or is Motorola just releasing a new version every couple of months?

No date on it, except at the bottom it says Motorola Inc, 2005. As far
as Motorola releasing a new version every few months, I have no idea
whatsoever. But I did follow your advice, and got tech support
in...... Costa Rica. They are emailing me the updated version of MPT.
They said to uninstall the version I have in my computer and then
install the version they are emailing to me. I am not doing it
tonight. I have had enough for today fighting with this. But I'll let
you know what happens. One other thing, it seems the battery does not
hold a charge for very long. Do you have the same experience?

Mine was fully charged this morning, has been on continuosly for about
ten hours now. The indicator still shows "fully charged". I put it on
charge when I go to bed at night and unplug it when I get up in the
morning. I haven't tried it but I think the battery would probably last
for at least a couple of days of "powered on but idle". I very seldom
make or receive calls on it; I just feel better knowing it's there and
that I can be reached if I'm needed, and that I can summon help if I
need it.

You don't need V4.56 as my installed version details show. I use this
version with a V3 and 2 x V3i's with no problems. However <vbg>, I use it
on Win 98SE :)

Perhaps your battery life is due to the network and/or reception conditions?
My grandaughter has a V3 on UK O2 and only uses it occasionally. It holds a
charge for about 5 days, on day and night, although she probably makes about
10 minutes of calls and receives about the same over that period. This is
on the first replacement battery, put in about 8 months ago. Power cycling
the battery is needed, and an occasional long/overnight charge does work
wonders for the V3/V3i battery.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it. . . . But if you have any problems
with it I'd strongly recommend upgrading to W/2k or W/XP. Either one is
more robust and reliable than W98. W/2K needs Service Pack 4 plus a
bunch of patches. W/XP also needs a Service Pack plus the latest patches.
As for the Versions of MPT, V4.0 that I bought on CD from Amazon didn't
recognize my Verizon Wireless V3m. The 4.56 I downloaded recognizes the
V3m without problems. Note that there are several models call RAZR.
There are, at least, a V3c, V3i, and V3m. Mine's a V3m. I couldn't
tell you what the differences between V3 models are; they may be carrier
specific, use different cellular technologies, or they may be simply
cosmetic.
