Boycott ESPN when possible. They are pushing Nextel out of Cup sponsorship.
Sure, I'll watch the races, but I sure won't 'visit' any of the
products sponsored on the telecasts. That's just like ESPN...take
control of something so they can go and ruin it. Wanting (I think I
recall) 3 times ($30M/year vs current $10M/year) for Nextel to
continue. Nextel said they could not afford to do that, and I am sure
their customers are happy about that.
The local cable company was at one time thinking about coming out with
a'la carte selling of cable channels. the ESPN channels were
assigned a value twice that of the nearest channels. Just so you can
watch recycled poker on pro football sundays. And, my favorite
offering of theirs...the national spelling bee. Shat!
Those cheap bastards in Connecticut wouldn't even pony up enough
money for the NHL so the contract went to OLN/Versus instead.

so your point is that ESPN should sell the sponsorship for 1/3 of what
they can get elsewhere? I don't think their stockholders would like
that.

Nextel doesn't really exist anymore. They are Sprint. Poor Sprint can't
even change the name to 'Sprint Cup' because of the confusion with sprint
car racing. When Nextel signed on I think just about every NASCAR fan
expected that they wouldn't last beyond the 10 year contract length. I'm
surprised they haven't tried to sell it off to Coke or McDonalds or
something, sooner.

You have your acronims wrong, NASCAR upped the sponsorship fee from $10M to
$30M for the Bush series. I believe that the 2007 season will be the last
for Bush sponshorship.
The greedy France family is behind the sponsorship fee change.

Let's just say you are right in this (and, as other people have
posted, you aren't)...
Why do you give a crap if one sponsor is replaced by another?
Especially a sponsor who's been in the sport for as short a time as
Nextel? This ain't exactly Winston, STP, AC Delco or Tide being pushed
out.

Nextel is a second-rate wireless provider with crappy equipment. It's
a perfect fit with NASCAR.
