And the phones you've looked at include CDMA (or Japanese JDC or US TDMA)
phones? Surely all have some sort of a serial number but not all have an
IMEI.

Okay I should have added ESN as it's a US 'phone and not GSM. Presumably
the ESN prefixes the number. At least I've tried to give the guy a pointer
as why his 'phone might not work.
