Using 6610 as modem over InfraRed

Hi,

I'm trying to dial up an Internet provider (or in fact any phone) from a
laptop, throught the Nokia setup as a modem. I have installed the Nokia
modem drivers. I can connect using GPRS but the rates from AAPT Australia
are HORENDOUSLY expensive - 2.2c per kiloBIT. I need a second job to pay for
that.

I have set up a dialup connection on my laptop. I can connect the phone to
the laptop via infrared fine. But when I use the dial up connection, the PC
says opening port, and then dialing the number. Then the phone screen shows
"Dialing ....." the number. But then I get weird three tone sone - repeated
twice, and then th call disconnects. I can call the same number from the
phone manually without any problems.

Anyone know if there's a setting I need to change on the laptop (modem, dial
in etc) or on the phone?

Or any other help would really be appreciated.

I guess you have been using CS data before? Could this be a subscription
problem.

The CSD call is different from a voice call but you should be able to call a
data call to any ordinary PSTN number, the other end should just hear the
modem handshaking sound from the interworking unit when picking up the call.

In case your subscription is OK, you might need to change the modem
settings. Perhaps you are trying ISDN connection to a non-ISDN number, or
vice versa (ISDN should be preferable towards an ISP, if they have one,
speeds up the data call when modem negotiation is not needed).

Thanks for your reply. I'm not sure what CS data is. The number I'm calling
is a standard dial up number to an ISP - not ISDN.

I'm pretty sure it's not a subscription problem because as I said I can call
the number manually from the same mobile phone as I'm using to connect to
the computer. That connects to the modem at the other end fine. But there's
obviously some extra communication happening (or not happening) when the
number is dialed from the laptop through the IR link. I tried changing some
modem parameters such as speed but it made no difference.

I also thought if I could call the number manually on the mobile, and login
(not sure how to do that) then I might be able to use the IR link just to
connect straight through to the internet. A bit like an ADSL modem can login
to the ISP without the need for a PC. Then the PC connects to the modem and
is assigned an IP address.

Andrew, it is totally different to call an ISP modem number from the phone
(an ordinary voice call) compared to calling a data call. CS data means
circuit switched data as opposed to GPRS. You always do need a subscription
for CSD but some operators include CSD subscription to all accounts, you
should really first verify that you do have a CSD subscription.

A CS data call is a connection between the terminal and the interworking
unit in the network and a PSTN modem connection from the IWU to your ISP
modem. When you dial a data call from your PC, the phone behaves totally
differently towards the network in these two cases.
