I need a mobile 'phone only in case my car breaks down or there is some
other emergency.
I fancy either the Nokia 1600 or Nokia 2610. I have read lots of
reviews regarding both models and am somewhat put off by references to
very poor or non existent visibility in sunlight/daylight.
Would someone kindly comment on which is the best model and the
visibility aspects.

I have no experience with either of them, but all color screens have
visibility problems in bright sunlight. Some screens are readable in
sunlight, but then you're talking about much more expensive models
like the 6230i.
However, Nokia makes still some cheap models with monochrome LCD screens
like the 1100 and 1110. If readability in sunlight is important to you, the
monochrome models are unbeatable.

If you're considering a breakdown/emergency 'phone then I first suggest you
check the network availability in the areas you normally travel in/to. Then
perhaps pick the 'phone based on the available coverage. For out of town
areas, O2 and Vodafone seem to give best coverage. You need to also check
out terms and conditions for pay as you go/talk etc. top up pricing and if
there are any restrictions on none usage time before your service gets
disconnected.
As an emergency only 'phone then you probably only need a monochrome
display; a Nokia 1100 would probably do if you want to stick to Nokia.
Tesco Mobile <g> have the 1100 for £29.97 plus £10 free airtime on first top
up. Tesco run on O2's network so coverage is quite good.
They also have the 1600 for £34.97 with "free" air time.

What a co-incidence that you should mention the Nokia 1110 as I came
across that earlier this evening and researched it quite a lot on
Google.
Apparently the Nokia 1110 has been replaced by the Nokia 1110i which
also has monochrome graphic, easy to press buttons and very good
reviews. I may well go for this one but I need to have it on an Orange
Network as my wife is on Orange and the charge for Orange to Orange is
10p.
I am, as you will be aware, totally new to mobile 'phones and I would
very much appreciate any views you have on what I have just said.

Don't have any first hand knowledge of either 'phone unfortunately. If
you're likely to be calling her more than her you, then it's worth checking
the Tesco price plans. You can get 10p calls to other networks by picking
the standard plan and adding your wife's number as one of three favourites
that they allow.
I'm on T-mobile monthly contract and have no affiliation with or allegiance
to Tesco :)

Thanks a lot. I am slowly getting a feel of this technology and will
probably take the plunge quite soon. Tesco will be my next port of
call.

Just being idly curious, have you made a choice yet or still perusing and
contemplating?
