Under the signal meter, where it says 3G etc, when connecting to a
standard network not a 3g one and I go on the net I am getting a big
letter E what does the E stand for its not in the manual.

I was thinking that I am going to phone my mobile operator, I don't
think they have a edge network here, but I could be wrong.
The N73 puts all sorts of random crap on the display - I saw numerous
wierd icons that aren't documented anywhere - usually before it crashed
or froze (pretty frequently). It's a piece of crap, basically.

I have not had any crashing(touch wood), as for the icon it is edge, the
network I am using upgraded a few months ago.

Hi there. Am pretty sure it is EDGE. It get it some times on my n93. If
your unsure and if at all possible, connect through to the web using your
phone and a notebook and check for the speed. If its something near 384kbps
then its EDGE.
I don't normally use a 3G connection as I can connect through WLAN.
Its going get worse in a few years when faster data rates from SPs come on
the go.
