screen "protectors" for LCDs

hi - trying to get a stright answer on screen protectors for LCD
screens (nokia n95 in this case).
I had one one - thought it was pish and removed it. now I need to
know if removing these things can strip anything from the LCD (I
dunno....antiglare coating or whatever) or should I be fine? (screen
*looks* fine btw).

Do you mean the clear vinyl peel-off thing that most new phones come with,
or something you have to dismantle the phone to get to? If it's the vinyl one,
it's just to keep the plastic window from getting scratched during manufacture,
shipping, handling, salesman demos, etc. Peel it, leave it, doesn't matter.

no its one of those types you apply yourself to help prevent scratches
etc. (see http://www.proporta.com/F02/PPF02P05...252&t_mode=des)

They are just a pain in the arse cos you always end up getting hairs
and dust under them hence I removed mine after a few days. I know
*some* of them use a mild adhesive but I am trying to find out if
removing them can damage a fragile lcd such as the nokia n95 has...
the n95 has no hard cover over the LCD (which I found a bit odd) so I
was hoping to get some technical info on how they are made e.g. in
terms of resilience...

Hi Gavin, I use screen protectors on my 6680 (and my Pocket PC) because
I often work in harsh environments. I've never had any problem removing
them and they don't appear to have caused any damage to the underlying LCD.

Putting them on in the first place can, as you've discovered, be a bit
of a pain. This is particularly so if, like me, your eyesight isn't what
it used to be :-)

I've even made my own protectors before now. Just cut a clear plastic
wallet to the correct size and attach it with a quick squirt of spray
photo mount. Works a treat and costs practically nothing :-)

Hi Steve,

cool thanks for that info. Well as I work in a dimly lit office which
does not count as a particularly harsh environment (except for the
language) I guess I dont have to take quite as many precautions with
my equipment.

So the 6680 has the same "soft" LCD (i.e. no hard shell over it then
as the n95)?

The language gets pretty harsh here too :-)

I'm not sure of the screens on the 6680 and N95 are similar but I can't
imagine (even) Nokia using a screen that could be damaged in this way.
It wouldn't last very long being put in and out of pockets, would it?

The screen on my PPC is certainly "soft" as it's a touch screen and I've
not had any problems with that :-)

This isn't a technical answer, but I doubt if the protector would damage
an LCD if removed. My T-Mobile Vario II (i.e. HTC TyTn) came with one - it
was of particulatly poor qaulity so much that it blurred the screen!! It
was very easy to remove after being on for a week and not a scratch on the
LCD.
