Sanyo SCP8400/ Phone as a Modem?

I just bought the Sanyo EVDO SCP8400
I'm also trying their Intenet free for a month.

i remember with the Treo 650 using PDA Net i was able to use my laptop to
browse instead of the phone itself for the same cheap internet fee without
having to purchase a phone as a modem plan.

Can the same deal be done with this Phone?
in other words for the $15/month use my laptop to connect as the phone is
being used as a modem?

This is a regular cause for confusion. Short answer: No.

Long Answer:

The original Sprint PCS Vision plan (as opposed to Power Vision) did allow
PAM. This Vision plan (again, as opposed to the currently available Power
Vision plan) has been grandfathered. In other words, this plan is no longer
available, but people who created contracts with Sprint when this plan was
available still have this plan. Also, if you DID have the Vision plan and
your contract expires, the grandfathered Vision plan is no longer available
to you.

Under the Power Vision plans, you must purchase a Phone as Modem Data Plan
to use PAM. There are only two to choose from. See

This is Sprint's supported method of providing a wireless high speed IP
network to you.

However, as I've lurked over time in this news group, I've seen some very
different experiences (paraphrasing, of course):

People have been able to socially engineer thier accounts back on the old
Vision plan when they renew thier contract, therefore still being able to
use PAM at $15.00/month.

People expecting that the PAM was included in the Power Vision plans getting
very large bills because they did not have a PAM data plan.

People recently purchasing thier phone and not buying a PAM data plan, but
able to use PAM without seeing charges on thier bill.

A combination of the two people above: Using PAM without seeing charges on
thier bill, then eventually getting very large unexpected bills.

Often I see long time customers who dont understand that thier Vision plan
was grandfathered telling new customers that they can use PAM for $15.00
because the long time customer can.

Thanks for the thorough explanantion Todd, but what can palm treo 700P
owners paying only $15/ month use a program like PDA Net to connect their
Treos as PAM to their laptops for unlimited data.

Actually, a correction on this: we've never known for sure if tethering
was REALLY allowed with the $15 plan. Originally the answer was yes,
then it was a stern no (with Sprint cracking down on it for a while),
then an occasional "yes" through unofficial channels.

Then finally, the answer seemed to be that Sprint would look the other
way as long as you didn't make it blatantly obvious that you were
tethering, and downloading multiple gigabytes of data every month.

In any case, we do know that for most 1xRTT phones, Sprint couldn't do
anything to prevent tethering without completely shutting off your
Vision access. So it was on by default.

This changed with most EVDO capable phones, which now send different NAI
logins depending on what type of connection you want. Unless hacked, an
EVDO phone will the network what you're trying to do.

So does this mean Isaiah Taht the treo 700P or the Sanyo SCP8400 can work
wtih tethering?

What program if so would I use to get the Sanyo scp8400 tethered since I
already pay their $15/month internet fee

Also, all kinds of other stuff can happen: the salesman, not wanting to
loose a high dollar sale, sets up the account so the PAM plan is not needed
to use the PAM. A subscriber can call and threaten to cancel thier account,
and retention reconfigures thier account so PAM is free.

So, you may decide to not add a data plan to your phone and get the dialer
software and get your PAM connection set up and never get charged for a
single kb of data. But keep in mind that if you dont have one of the two PAM
plans I gave a link to below, you fall under casual usage and could be
billed at any time per kb of data.

On windows these programs (or the one I use, anyway) will add a new dialup
connection that you can run when your phone is connected (via bluetooth or
mini usb) to get on the Sprint data network.
