I'm thinking about getting a Sprint PPC-6700 PDA phone. The PDA
functionality would replace my current (ancient) Palm PDA, which came with
its own Palm Desktop software to install on my PC. I see that I can sync
the PPC-6700 with Microsoft Outlook, but I don't own Outlook. If I get
this phone, does it come with any kind of desktop PIM software? Or do I
*have* to buy Outlook if I want the same desktop functionality that Palm
Desktop currently provides?
(Actually, I use Outlook at work, but just for my email; I sync my PDA to
Palm Desktop at work too. And my work installation of Outlook is not
connected to an Exchange server or anything like that; I just use it to
read and download (and store) my IMAP messages.)

Have you considered a Treo instead of the PPC-6700. The Treo 700p is a
Palm PDA and it comes with the current version of Palm Desktop. The Treo
also syncs with Evolution on Linux (although it sounds like you are a
Windows user so that doesn't matter to you).

Frankly, I'm only considering the PPC-6700 because with the rebate (which
requires I purchase it by tomorrow!) it will cost $200. The Treo is $300,
which is just more than I'm willing to spend for a phone/PDA right now
(especially when I still get by fairly well with my old Palm.) Ironically,
I'd actually prefer to stay with the Palm OS, and I *would* like to be able
to sync it with Evolution on my Ubuntu machine. Too bad the Treo isn't the
one offering the rebate.

Are you re-upping your contract? When I renewed mine (2 years), they
exchanged my Treo 600 for a refurb Treo 650. At least I *think* it's a
refurb -- I couldn't see ANY evidence that it was ever used before.
I've had it for a little over a year, and it's been working like a champ!

Integration with Outlook is such an inherent part of the PIM software
that MS kindly bundles a copy with every PPC. (Usually an older one,
assumedly as to not compete with sales of the current version of Outlook.)
My T-Mobile MDA (the T-Mo equivalent of the 6700) came with Outlook 2002.

Just to warn you, a PPC can only sync e-mail with one PC (so either your
home PC or work, but not both.) However, you can use the 6700's built-in
e-mail client to connect to your IMAP (or POP) e-mail (up to five accounts,

You are correct, the PPC6700 ships with a CD containing a copy of
Outlook 2002 with the cd key on the sleeve.

I believe the latest active sync 4.2 allows the device to sync with
multiple computers. You might be thinking of the fact that the Outlook
that's provided can only be installed on 1 pc.
