Default Sprint Phone In Europe?

Is it possible to call a Sprint phone that is physically in Europe that
is setup with a US area code?

Yes, if the phone in question is a Sprint "international" phone that
runs on US CDMA and European GSM frequencies. Europe isn't CDMA - as
far as I know, it's all GSM.

That is correct. This was one of the reasons that I switched to Cingular. A
CDMA phone in europe is not much more than an expensive paperweight.

If you don't travel frequently Sprint will rent you a phone with GSM that you
can use on your trip. (Note: International roaming is quite expensive.)

A other alternative that a previous poster mentioned is that you can buy a
Sprint "International" phone that both a CDMA and a GSM radio in it. The
current line of international phones work fine. (They don't have anything
the really catches my eye.)
