Default nextel phone with sprint subscription?

Any way to use a nextel phone if you have a sprint contract and don't
want to change your plan?

Yes. (I have found out) Sprint requires you change your (Sprint) plan
to Nextel. I understand Sprint is in business to make money. However,
that was a dirty trick they pulled on existing Sprint customers, in
assigning the Motorola i580 as a Nextel phone -- obviously to increase
Nextel phone subscribers. **** Sprint and the rest of those predatory
corporate phone company assholes.

Does it have anything to do with the fact that they are completely
different technologies? (Nextel==iDEN; Sprint PCS=CDMA). I know, it
probably shouldn't make a difference.

And I wonder if they have the two billing systems integrated yet? If
not, that could be why you have to switch.

Any way to use a nextel phone if you have a sprint contract and don't
want to change your plan?

" Thank you for contacting Sprint Together with Nextel Online. I can
certainly assist you with information about switching from the Sprint
to
the Nextel Network.

Resolution
************

You have the option to transfer your Wireless Number to the Nextel
Network without an Early Termination Fee(ETF) and Activation Fees.
You
will need to switch to the Nextel network to take advantage of the
Service Plans. The Service Plans and features are very similar on
both
networks and we should be able to setup a plan that is very similar
to
the one that you currently have, unless it is a specialty plan. You
will
also need a compatible Nextel phone to use on the Nextel Network since
all
Sprint Phones are incompatible.

The Sprint Commitment will be cancelled and you will have a new
Nextel
Commitment in accordance with your new Nextel Account.

There is (sic) no new credit checks; however, your current credit
score will
determine if a deposit is needed for the new Account with the Nextel
Network. In order to find out which promotions you qualify for on
the
Nextel Network you will need to speak directly to the Telesales
Department. To begin the process of transferring your Wireless
Number,
please call our Telesales Department at 1-800-Sprint1."

That sounds exactly right. Where's the problem?

Agreed- I see no problem. The functionality available on the CDMA network
is not the same as that offered on the iDen network- the most obvious
examples are the lack of EVDO on the iDen network and PTT on the CDMA
network. Differences such as these (and others) mean that different plans
have to offered on the different networks

It's my understanding that billing integration is about 25% complete.

It would depend on your plan - i.e., is it one offered in the Nextel
"ensemble" billing system? If it isn't you can't switch without changing
plans. If it is you can probably change but would probably have to extend
your contract - not sure on that one.

All new plans are (pretty much) offered on both the CDMA and the iden
platform. Unfortunately you cannot share minutes on pooling plans - yet.
