Mobile services provider Sprint Nextel Corp (FON.NYS) Wednesday
announced losses for the first quarter due to a decline in its
postpaid subscriber base.
Sprint Nextel said its losses in the three months stood at $211
million, or $0.07 per share, as compared to profits from continuing
operations of $417 million, or $0.05 per share, in the year-ago
quarter. Excluding onetime amortization charges, Sprint Nextel earned
$0.18 per share in the latest quarter. The company's revenues rose
moderately to $10.1 billion in the first quarter, from $10.07 billion
in the same period a year earlier. Sprint Nextel said it added a net
of 600,000 new wireless subscribers during the quarter, taking the
total subscriber base to 53.6 million. The company lost 220,000
postpaid customers during the three-month period.
