Thanks to all for replies to my prev. post about Telenav; I just bought a
Sanyo 8400 (nobody recommended that, but it seems to work well; a bigger
screen would be nice but there were other considerations).
I thought it would be nice to have an earphone to better hear the turn by
turn voice instructions, so I bought a Plantronics 665. I'm disappointed
with this; the sound quality is poor, especially on loud sounds like the
ringing of a called phone, and in general it won't go very loud. If I have
the earphone on my right ear and put the cell phone in my left pants pocket,
the quality suffers badly.
I called Plantronics, and they say that's the way it is, blame it on
Bluetooth.
Maybe so, but does anyone have a suggestion for an earphone to use in a
fairly loud car? It's actually a convertible, but I gather no one has a good
solution for windnoise.
Back to the real reason I bought the Bluetooth earphone: to use with
Telenav. Lo and behold, the voice prompts do not appear on the earphone.
Sprint says this is software, not theirs, but Bluetooth's, but when there is
an upgrade that might handle it, it would be on the phone. (?!) It sounds
like Sprint is just disabling yet another profile, but I dunno. I expect if
I contact Bluetooth, they will blame Sprint.
The Sprint CS guy said the wired earphone should work; I'll try that in the
morning when everything, including me, is recharged. Reverting to a wired
solution sounds pretty lame; but all in all, counting the number of wires
you have to carry around with you to charge the earpiece, it's not bad at
all.
If anyone has a favorite earpiece, please let me know. Also, if you know a
Bluetooth earpiece/phone/nav service/cellular carrier that play together
well.
I think the sanyo katana SCP6600 is one of the best non gadget laden phones
out big screen loud head set.
good phone it has been top rated for months in many magazines.
and I cant wait for the release in august of the katana 2.

- Point your browser to Sprint Users Forum and see what other users say
about which blurtooth works well with your specific phone
- You can GOOGLE for comparision between bluetooths. I ran into it few
times before but don't remember the link
- Point your browser to some online store like www.amazon.com and search for
bluetooth's then read end users' feedbacks.
FWIW, I just picked up a Katana a couple weeks ago. I tried the Plantronics
330 and had the same issues as you with terrible static with the phone just
in my pocket 3 feet away. Went back to Best Buy and picked up the
Plantronics 510. It's a little bigger but the sound quality and signal
difference is amazing. I can walk into the next room and can't tell the
difference. It's plenty loud and quite comfortable to wear. And if you
look for reviews, you will find it's one of the few that consistently has
great comments. Spend the extra money, it's worth it.

Yes, the 510 looks very attractive, and costs no more, or maybe even less
than the 665.
The real problem I have is that bluetooth does not work with Telenav. I can
use a wired headset to hear the turn by turn. Sprint blames it on bluetooth,
but I have my doubts. I wonder if bluetooth works for music.
Anyway, I'll probably look for a decent wired set for travel and not use
hands free for normal phone use.

Yes the problem is with bluetooth, there are certain bluetooth
'profiles' that are required for the type of thing you are talking
about. For example your phones bluetooth needs to have the A2DP
bluetooth profile in order to stream music to a headset. The headset
also has to hae the same A2DP profile to be able to receive the
music. If either one of them doesn't then you would not be able to
listen to music through the bluetooth headset. For the record I
checked, and the Katana does not have this particular profile. Most
of the newer phones, especially however most likely will, but it is
best to check out the specs on the particular device you are looking
to buy to make sure.
