Unfortuntaely, yes it does.
At least in the general case of your buying yourself a new phone from, e.g.,
eBay or a store and having it activated. I suppose they might make exceptions
if it's a warranty replacement? -- I'm not sure.

One of my kid's phones just started to have too many electronic and
physical problems (missing battery cover, etc.). I bought a replacement
phone on EBay and Sprint still let me keep the rebate schedule since it
was a replacement phone for technical issues, but I had to insist on it
and remind them when it was activated.

They never made the exception for me [Daughter had an insurance replacement
and also, I had major issues with them ... see post from August 2006].
Anyway, I note some nice new phones, so I just thought I would check to see if
they have come to their senses yet.

How do you know they let you keep it? I ask sincerely. They put "notes" in
the system, or even "executive notes" that say thing like "contract was not
actually extended" or "rebate offer should be allowed in September", but it
turns out that the vast majority of those notes have no enforcement power.
Just double check that they made the exception for you.
I am sad to hear that they still use this silly system; it should be based
100% on when you last purchased a new phone under contract.
