Default Qualcomm - 25 years

KFMB-TV, here in San Diego where I am working this week, just ran a
blurb congratulating Qualcomm on their 25th anniversary. Qualcomm, of
course, is a San Diego company founded by a San Diego native.

I found it interesting that during the 30-second... PSA, I guess it
was... they actually mentioned that Qualcomm was responsible for the
CDMA air interface (they didn't use the phrase "air interface", but they
did specifically refer to "CDMA"). I don't know how many people even
know what CDMA is.

Coincidentally, today I spent about two hours working at our data
center, which is surrounded by Qualcomm's huge corporate campus.

It's a pity that Qualcomm wasn't able to sell the CDMA mobile concept
to Europe but as they were well and truly GSM at that stage and as
CDMA was NIH (Not Invented Here) it didn't go anywhere.. Down here in
New Zealand where we have both network types, CDMA still seems more
reliable with better coverage. It's due to be closed in 2012 as the
carrier Telecom NZ rolled out last year a UMTS 850 network to replace
it as no one else in this part of the world still uses CDMA so roaming
becomes an issue.

W-CDMA was adopted by the GSM Association as their "3G" offering and
is cdma (but not cdma 2000) so Qualcomm is getting royalties from W-
CDMA.

It's a pity, indeed, that the harmonization talks didn't go anywhere.
At the time the only commercial networks were cdma (IS 95).

Thanx for the info. I thought Qualcomm still had their finger in the
WCDMA pie. lets hope it all gets sorted with 4G (LTE) but somehow I
expect not..

Still royalties in LTE, but not just for Qualcomm any more.
