T-Mobile Data Plans?

What kind of data plans can I get with T-Mobile?

Not wifi or hot spots but just web broswer data

Do they have unlimited data for about 20 USD per month like Cingular
had but discontinued?

It depends on what you mean by data. If all you want is WAP, then you
can get what they now call T-Mobile Web for $5.99 a month. I
personally think the new branding of that service is misleading since
it's WAP only and not the full Web, but....

If you want full Web, then you need to go with T-Mobile Internet,
which is 30.

Ummm.... I use Google's Java Email program and their map software. I
also use Opera Mini on my Razor phone from T-Mobile. I don't get
charged for anything additional and never had. I just pay the $5.99
extra a month for it.

Ummm, you're not getting access to any application that uses port 80
on the $5.99 plan. E-mail and WAP browsers can be used without paying
for a TM Internet plan, and I never claimed the contrary. But try
using a device that has a fully functional browser that uses port 80
and/or integrated e-mail and you'll be sorely out of luck on your
$5.99 plan.

Today, there's only two, AFAIK: T-Mobile Web for $6/month. It gives you
POP/IMAP/SMTP e-mail and limited web browsing via T-Mobile's proxy server
(which blocks streaming and any downloads greater than 1MB), or "Total
Internet" for $30/month that lifts the download limit restrictions, opens
most ports for streaming and includes T-Mo Wi-Fi Hotspots access. (They
used to sell this for $20 w/o Wi-Fi but now force you to get the Wi-Fi
with it.)

Personally I use the $6 plan. The best value in mobile data, IMHO,
because unlike Sprint's (much faster) $15 Vision plan or Cingular's $20
MEdia plans, tethering a PC is NOT prohibited.

Having said that, data on T-Mo is currently free to all subscribers due
to some (presumably temporary) systemwide glitch, so if you use T-Mo,
already, now is good time to "try before you buy!"

It's not WAP-only- it also allows HTTP access through a proxy server, but
limits downloads to 1MB. For mobile browsing I find that sufficient.
I've even tethered my laptop to my phone when I've had no other method of
web access.

True- the main difference (normally) is the $6 plan must use the proxy
server (216.155.165.50:8080) where the $30 plan doesn't.

Having said that, T-Mo currently has left the barn-door open on the
wap.voicestream.com APN so any T-Mo account has full web access until
they fix it.

How long have you been doing that? A glitch in T-Mo's system has opened
all ports since early November through the present time. While Google
Maps is currently working on my phone, it's only recently- proir to
November it did not.

In fact those without any data plan can currently use Google maps if they
can configure thir phone to bypass the T-Mo proxy server (most high-end
and non-T-Mo-branded phones can.)

With the $5.99 plan, can you set up a VPN connection to a corporate server?

AFAIK, no, they have a special "corporate" version of the $30 plan that
allows VPN. It has a different APN (IIRC, it's
internet3.voicestream.com.)

This answer appears to have misinterpreted the OP's question. As I
understand the question, it was "Can the $5.99 plan support a VPN
connection? [or is the $30 plan required for VPN connections]" The "to a
corporate server" part was redundant since corporations are usually the only
ones interested in VPN connections to their servers. I saw nothing in the
question that asked about a special T-Mobile corporate plan.
