Two things:
It's a shot in the dark, but one thing we did was set up
a username (username@tmomail.net instead of the default
form with the phone number, e.g.
5105555555@tmomail.net).
It's weakly possible this improved things. It in any
case did not seem to hurt.
The other thing is that the mail unreliability first
came into play for us when we were outside of a TMobile area
(in the south, so that the phone associated with some
local carrier). So it may be more stable if you're
not roaming in and out of Tmobile.
I assume you know about the reverse direction, mobile-to-email.
