Default Newb question about 3g iPhone

Pardon my ignorance but I was hoping someone could explain this to me.

I was under the impression that ATTs cell phone network is non-3g. I've
heard it referred to as a 2.5g or 2.75g network. Now if Apple releases a 3g
iPhone won't it need a 3g network to run on? How will folks who subscribe to
ATT be able to take advantage of the speed?

Thanks for any info!

AT&T has 3g coverage in most cities and is spending to expand
coverage. Where are you located? Lubbock, TX for instance has no 3g
currently, all the larger cities in Texas do have 3g. Houston, Dallas,
San Antonio, Austin, Corpus Christi, and assorted other areas. Check
the coverage map (first link).

Oh wow, I had no idea ATT had 3g coverage. I'm in L.A. and the coverage
looks pretty good here. Thanks for the info Ron!

The maps show good coverage at Pico and La Cienga for instance. Keep
in mind the map is sometimes optimistic.

Something else to consider

Apparently you can not talk and data transfer at the same time on
Verizon or Sprint.

Neither can you on GSM..or at least with my Moto V557 that has to drop
the data call for me to answer a voice call.

You probably were not in a 3G area or else it was crappy hardware.

The 3G iPhone will allow simutaneous data and voice, surf and talk
(and video) at the same time. Yes it can be done on AT&T's 3G network.

It can also be done on 3G or faster GSM in other countries.

Depends on the hardware. Many 3G phones can do simultaneous voice/data (on
3G, of course- in 2G "fallback" areas it's still either/or.)

Nor GSM, unless you have 3G service. Luckily, Rogers' 3G service does
it nicely, and I'd expect AT&T to implement similar.
