Anyone have word on release date for Nokia e71?
I know, I know;
It ain't the iPhone but, if anyone has any "hard" information on
availability dates for the Nokia e71, I'd appreciate it.

Several HoFo members already have APAC versions sold by a couple of
popular Hong Kong vendors. The US version is already on display at Nokia
stores, so actual stock is estimated to be a few weeks away.

BTW - since this is an AT&T newsgroup - I was referring, of course, to the
generic unbranded E71. There are rumors that AT&T has a sample and is
considering picking up this phone, but any confirmation or time course on
something like that would be pure speculation. Besides, an AT&T-branded
version could very well be crippled just like the E62.

Thanks for the follow-up, Mike.
Two things: I called up a couple of ATT retail stores & talked w/sales
reps. Both said that they haven't gotten word of a release date but it
will be soon after iPhone release (11 July). Of course, "soon" couldn't
be quantified.
Secondly, you write about the E62 being "crippled" by ATT: I'd like to
find out /what/ was crippled. Do you have a list or a source? That'd
help me choose between buying the E71 from ATT or other suppliers.

The E62 was an E61i customized for Cingular/AT&T by removing WiFi, Euro 3G
bands, and support for installation of third-party apps. I haven't seen
any talk about what "customization" they might do on an AT&T-branded E71.

As for me ... I'm going to wait and see. The market has changed a bit
since then, and perhaps they will offer an E71 without significant
changes from stock in order to compete. After all, the iPhone is sold with
WiFi intact. Besides, if a contract renewal gets a decent subsidy, it would
take a big bite out of the $500+ price tag.
I'm also waiting to hear more about earpiece volume. I love my E51 but
extended use of the keypad on a long trip made me long for QWERTY. In a
pinch I got a cheap used E61i from eBay. I should have done more research,
as there have been complaints about the volume being barely adequate for
noisy environments. It takes a lot of fiddling to get the "sweet spot"
well positioned on my head, and even then the E51's volume blows the
pants off the E61i.
The first report on a non-prototype E71 I've read said it's "loud" on a
single test call. Hope that holds true.
There is a 100-plus page "official E71 thread" in thr S60 section of HoFo.
Start reading from the end ... most of the early stuff is idle chatter and
speculation. Things got interesting only this week when real production
units got into peoples' hands.

Yup, I'll be waiting too. It's encouraging that s60's source will be
gpl'd... Hopefully ATT won't shoot itself in the foot on this one.

I've been able to /mostly/ replace my laptop with a combo of the n810
and a BT keyboard. I'd be expecting to do the same with the e71, for
long-ish typing projects.

Yea, that's where I went after you decoded HoFo for me <grin>. Fwiw,
I'll guess that general availability will start a month from the
iPhone's launch date (~11 August).
