Default Google Talk for the iPhone released today

Google Talk for the iPhone released
Google released in the US a new version of Google Talk designed
specifically for the iPhone and iPod Touch browsers.

In addition to sending your friends Gmail messages from your iPhone,
you can now chat with them too.
Google Talk for the iPhone is just a web service so no apps need to be
installed.

There are some differences from using Google Talk on your computer.
For instance, in order to receive instant messages with Google Talk on
your iPhone, the application needs to be open in your Safari browser.
When you navigate away to another browser window or application, your
status will be changed to "unavailable" and your Google Talk session
will be restarted when you return.

Point your iPhone Safari browser to www.google.com/talk to start
chatting on your iPhone. Via the Google Mobile blog.

Not being multitasking really sucks, doesn't it?

We have Linux Pidgin ported to the Maemo tablets. It supports a whole
list of protocols:

"What is Pidgin?

Pidgin is a multi-protocol Instant Messaging client that allows you to
use all of your IM accounts at once.

Pidgin can work with:

* AIM
* Bonjour
* Gadu-Gadu
* Google Talk
* Groupwise
* ICQ

* IRC
* MSN
* MySpaceIM
* QQ
* SILC

* SIMPLE
* Sametime
* XMPP
* Yahoo!
* Zephyr

Pidgin is free software. It is licensed under the GNU General Public
License (GPL) version 2. This means you are free to use it and to modify
it, but if you distribute your modifications you must distribute the
modified source code as well."

You can open as many accounts on these servers as you like. Pidgin
watches all of them, all the time if you like, then blinks the blue LED
behind the user keys when any of them has an IM for you so you can pop
up Pidgin to the front of your screen to chat. Mine has 4 accounts on 4
of them, which is too many for me.

I can't imagine having to use a browser for IM access, any more than
email access or usenet access. Browsers suck for comms.

Will the Google Talk support the iPhone 2.0 camera so you can videophone
them on Google Talk? Seems like they could implement the webcam, now
that they have sufficient bandwidth to support it. Google Talk video
works great on the N800's little webcam.

Of course, these were old back in Feb 07...(c;

What gets me is we STILL don't have video on Skype.....
