it makes perfect sense. people did get money back in the form of a
gift certificate. it's really quite simple.

they work exactly the same as money. most people bought stuff they
were planning on buying anyway. at the end of the day, people received
$100 back.
it's not any different than how many companies do it. have you ever
received a denied boarding voucher from an airline? they don't hand
back cash (except in very rare circumstances).

It makes no sense. Even your statement is flawed- "people did get money
back in the form of a gift certificate." So they were able to walk into
the Apple store and exchange the gift certificate for cash?
Can you fill your gas tank with an Apple gift certificate? Pay your
mortgage?
Didn't think so. Nobody got $100 back.

No, that's not correct. Apple's running at about 50% profit margin on new
products. (Iphone 3G is $137 cost so several analysts say.)
So, what they got back was only $50 in Apple.....they had no choice to buy.
They should have gotten a check, like others have posted.
.....instead they got screwed.....

their profit margin is irrelevant, nevertheless, apple has a 35.8%
gross profit margin and 21.7% pre-tax profit margin.

No I'm not, newbie.
At no point did any of the iPhone get unencumbered compensation of $100,
which is exactly what a check would have provided. Customers were forced
to purchase additional products to see any of the $100.
No customers were allowed to receive $100 compensation for the expense of
the iPhone without purchasing more crap.

don't make me laugh, a Car dealer can't get near as much for my car as I
can on my own... I have much more knowledge than he has, plus I can get
30% above bluebook since I know how to provide the most value. If you
sell your car through a "dealer" expect to lose 25% of the actual value.

ah, you need to get out of the UNEDUCATED South... every time I read
your posts, it's like looking into the 1880's when people were poorly
educated.
Larry, no offense, but you're an idiot compared to most modern standards.
