How much are used, unlocked, original iPhones going for now?
I don't care about the 3G, and I can't use AT&T for cellular because the
coverage in the SF Bay Area is significantly worse than Verizon's
coverage, but I would like a 2G iPhone for use on WiFi, and when
traveling to Europe and mcuh of Asia to use with a prepaid SIM.
Shouldn't there be a glut of these phones on the craigslist soon? I'd
gladly pay $75 for an unlocked 2G iPhone in good condition.

during the 2nd year, 2G iPhones will retain around 90% of their value,
mainly because it's an Apple product and they always hold value better
than competing devices. Then expect a 20% drop in years 3, 4.
So an unlocked 2G 8GB sells for around $450 and the 4GB around $400.
there won't be a glut since most will hold on or give them as handme
downs when an owner gets a 3G model.
you can get a feel of what the market is paying here:

So an unlocked 2G 8GB sells for around $360 and the 4GB around $340.

Well that's good, the typical eBay auction for the 2G 8GB iPhone is
ending at well under $100, often with the reserve not met. It should
come down over the next couple of weeks as sellers rush to sell before
the value falls even more. On craigslist the 16 GB is going for around
$175, and the 8GB for about $150.
It's kind of amusing to see the ads for the 2G model for $300, when the
new 3G model costs $200.

Interesting- however, I seem to recall the first batch lost about 1/3 of
their value in six weeks... ;-)

Horseshit! Users were dumping them on anyone who would buy them on the
waiting lines all night for $50.....reported in many many of the websites
like Gizmodo. The deal was $50 and a 2G for your place in the line....a
great deal for people in the 20 states ATT doesn't have 3G installed in!

no, it was 20% for the 8GB model, and 0% for the 4GB model.
> So true.
no, totally incorrect... look at the facts.
the iphone has retained the most initial value of any cell phone during
the first year in the history of cell phones.

no it's not, they continually sell for right around $360 as the final
winning amount.
look at an actual link: (you may have to sign in to see the latest
factual information)
http://snipurl.com/2x48i [completed_iphone_ebay_search]
yep! $360 on average, just like i said.
> often with the reserve not met.
you clearly didn't look at the link provided. only look at sold units,
the reserve doesn't matter.

but it's quite unlikely you can actually get one for that amount on
Craigslist.

but you are MISSING the entire point... the new 2G costs $240 MORE in
contract fees than the initial $199 price, thus the original iphone is
$360, or about $80 less than the new one... which sounds about right.
don't you do any factual research? guess not.

They're selling for $60-80 on eBay for the 8GB model. I think that in
the next couple of weeks the price on craigslist will fall to this level
as well. However I don't think Apple's making the same mistake on the 3G
model that they made on the 2G model by overpricing it, then being
forced to drop the price soon after release. Of course it all depends on
demand. AT&T (and other carriers) may want to increase the subsidy if
the unit doesn't sell as well as hoped. The experts predict that the
price will fall to $100 with a contract, but that the contract may go to
3 years instead of the usual 2 years.
