I have a tuner app on the iPhone that allows me to connect to
streaming radio anywhere in the world, even over EDGE. There are
literally thousands of such stations which put their audio on the web
too.
I also listen to police scanners and such with just a click on the
bookmark I created for each. Now when I see there is a traffic
blockage with Google Maps on the iPhone I just pull up the live radio
that covers that area to see what is going on by listening to FIRE,
EMS, and the POLICE.
The iPhone is much smaller than my smallest digital scanner radio and
in a pinch works just as well. The big thing is that I have it with me
all the time!
Why worry about a crappy FM radio while in the gym when you can have
much more with the tuner app?
The more advanced uses for Tuner require a little more knowledge of
how some audio is streamed. You are on the edge of hacking if you
grab audio from protected sites. ;>)
If a major part of YOUR business plan was to SELL music to the customers of
your hardware, by the song, i. e. iTunes.....would you put an FM radio
inside or allow any app to be mounted on it, like last.fm, to screw up that
money stream? Come on, THINK!
You'll never see an app on the App Store that bypasses iTunes making Apple
piles of money.....
.....it's part of the problem of buying hardware from a company that also
sells software and data services. We want the hardware to run OUR software
and data, but noone elses, if we can get them to buy the hardware all
hobbled up in that manner. If we get them to worship us, we can easily get
away with it that way....proprietary.
It's why there's no Tucows for Iphone and very little for Macs.
It's why you have to hack its OS to let you inside.

Exhibit A- NO Apple iPod has ever included an FM radio. It's omission on
the iPhone hardly seems to be a cellular conspiracy, particularly since the
iPod Touch (the "phoneless" iPhone) also omits it.
Exhibit B- AT&T offers Pandora streaming music for $8.99/month. Except
iPhone users get it for free. The iPhone Can also stream music from
countless other free sources. Wouldn't your conspiracy theory make more
sense if they INCLUDED a radio to hopefully cut down on data use? The
iPhone plan is unlimited- not pay per kb.

If it pleases the court, your honor.....Whether Apple's product has a
sellphone or not, they have been involved in iTunes for a long time,
selling downloaded files long before the sellphone products, omitting
the FM radio to sell more tunes....This argument is moot.

the month rolled into a package is perfectly acceptable by any sellphone
carrier, including ATT, another useless deflection of the issue, here.
Both of these are "paid services", whether my honorable opponent cares
to point that out or not. If one is allowed to listen to FM radio
without some monthy scam to extract extra money, it goes against both
the Apple and ATT business plans to SELL everything the device does to
the customer base....like Sirius/XM or iTunes or App Store. Some
services, like ATT's Pandora, the customers are paying for whether they
want to use it or not, as part of the "data plan" for the device, which
has increased a considerable percentage with the bogus 3G "upgrade",
which only works on 3G in a very limited number of urban areas and
reverts back to the same old 2G, at a considerable increase in cost, for
the rest of the planet......or not at all in the countryside. Nothing
either company does for the customers is, in reality, "free" in the open
source sense of the word.

The iPhone data is $30/month. Data plans for other smartphones on AT&T are
also $30/month. Only the iPhone gets Pandora for free. It may be
"included" in the data plan, but it isn't for any other phone.

Not a deflection at all- you constantly tell us how "SELLphone" companies
cripple phones to prevent people from using the data plans they're paying
for. I've just given you an example of a high-bandwidth application
they're actually ENCOURAGING you to use by not charging for it.

Nothing ANY for-profit company does is free in the "open source sense of
the word." Any "freebies" are value-adds to get you to buy a particular
product or service. "Free" Pandora, to Apple and AT&T, is just another
reason to choose an iPhone on AT&T over an EnV on Verizon or Instinct on
Sprint.

Now you're deflecting- I just gave a single example of a situation where the
"evil SELLphone companies" actually encouraged data usage rather than
discourage it, that's all.
Yes, the Phone seems crippled in many ways, but it seems more "self-
crippled" by Apple, rather than crippled by provider decree like your
Motorola. (BREW? "Real" Motos have a Java VM!) All carriers worldwide
get the same iPhone, unlike the carrier-specific customized handsets sold
by most manufacturers to carriers, so AT&T can't order "extra crippling"
than, say, O2 in the UK or Rogers in Canada.
Compare that to the typical cellphone sold in the US, where a single model
of phone can have vastly different feature sets on different carriers.

radio tuner for the ipods, so your theory is groundless.
