Just call and ask to cancel service with a waiver of Early Termination
Fee as they can't provide service. If they refuse,
escalate, and keep escalating.

As a last resort write to the NY STate AG with a certfied copy
to ATT HQ.

It does on my iPhone 3g. Hold both causes a slider with a red arrow and a
legend saying "Slide to power off."

But if you follow the instructions in the iPhone User Guide:

Reset iPhone: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button
at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo
appears.

And continue to hold both buttons, the screen first turns dark and then has
the Apple logo.

Be patient. Don't let go of the buttons at the first screen change.

If you follow instructions completely, it does.

It's a known bug in iPhone's Mail client. It's been around since the
first release of iPhone. The problem is not in the server.

There are quite a few different manifestations of the bug. My favorite is
when it starts the endless spinning cursor and gets *hot*.
