Android G1 runs it without crashing, as do all the Nokia Linux
tablets....
================================================== ==============
Todd, you'll appreciate the irony of my finding the Asus EE PC700 little
Linux laptop at Best Buy, here in town, for $299, this week. It was WAY
too close to the Apple Kiosk to be ignored as the curious geeks and
customers watched my testing it to see if I wanted to buy it.
I had three 16GB SDHC Class 6 cards loaded with various forms of movies,
music, ebooks, PDF files, Windows wmv, wma, realvideo, realaudio, stuff
I had downloaded from Usenet's binary groups.
I'm happy to report the little Asus' media player played everything but
OGG and FLAC I had on the cards just fine. There are OGG and FLAC
codecs for free that will run on it. DivX movies straight off
alt.binaries.movies.divx in really fast bit rates were very smooth in
great stereo that really impressed the assemblage, especially the store
people who had never seen the little Linux laptop run anything before.
We made way too much noise and attracted the Apple guys from next door
who opened their mouths at the wrong time only to get a big SD card put
in their hands the overpriced stuff refused to play. The fun value went
up when the apologists started making lame excuses.
I think what Best Buy is selling for $299 is an obsolete model, now.
But, it's the first time I've seen any Linux boxes at Best Buy. They
had the Asus EE in Windows dress with hard drives before and got a new
model I hadn't seen before for around $390 with the Micro$oft tax added
onto it.
Boots in 20 seconds. Nice little machine but seems to lack that
maemo.org kind of community support the Linux tablets have established,
sponsored by Nokia.
