The ones at MacWorld 2007 were, and there is certainly an open slot at
the top where the SIMM card sits... how it comes out (see the black dot)
is unknown, but it's user removable.

I give it a few days, if not a month, someone will find a way to unlock this
phone. I am an AT&T customer, and have an unlocked quadband gsm phone lying
around which I used as a Go Phone till I put the kids on the contract. If
going overseas, in my case, I'd take both my phone and the unlocked phone
for personal reasons so my mom could contact me if there's any problems, my
dads almost 90.

"Not removable" almost certainly really means "not intended to be
removed", which isn't quite the same thing.
Horribly inconvenient to remove, that's probably true. (I suspect as
with iPods, the case is not designed to let you in easily.)

So could I buy one in the UK, stick in my Orange O2 PAYG SIM card and it
would be good to go as a mobile phone and pricey male jewelry combo?

No. It's subsidy locked to AT&T wireless.

I thought there was a ($175?) buy-out available.

You can break your contract for $175. That doesn't unlock the phone.

It depends on how much effort was put into the locking scheme. Not
everything gets cracked. AFAIK, DirecTV is not cracked (DISH is
cracked). Some phones cannot be unlocked.
