Want new phone but keep current SIMS card and service
I have a Samsung X426 cellphone (AT&T) about 3 years old.
I'd like to move the SIMS card to a newer phone that will work with my
current AT&T service.
What kind of SIMS card do I have?
What phones will work with my SIMS card and where can I get them?
I'm looking for a phone that has a camera (important) and a PDA (not
so important).

The Samsung A707 has a good camera, a slot to put a mini SD card (for extra
memory) assignable ringtones for individuals...Bluetooth, lots of other
goodies...Great little phone..The Motorola V300 is nice too. :-) Liz

I signed up with AT&T about 3 years ago, and I recall having free
roaming on Cingular for a while.
My SIMS card says AT&T wireless, my Samsung SGH-X426 boots up and says
AT&T wireless, but it says Cingular over the clock/calendar display
when the phone is ready for use.
I don't see any other networks in the setup menu anymore; not even
AT&T !
Did I get moved to the (older?) Cingular network?
I went to Walmart, and the cell phone sales guy there took a look and
told me that I have an old SIMS card.
He said for $25, he could upgrade me to the new G3 SIMS card.
He said the newer phones (Blackjack, V707, KRAZR, etc) would would
work with the old SIMS card, but in a "diminished capacity" or slower
processing.
Is this true?
Is there anything bad about the new SIMS card?
If I bought the newer phones from him, I would get the G3 SIMS card.
Phone prices are around $150 to 250 for no contract (keep my crrent
service), about $50 to 80 for 1-year contract, and about $0 to $50 for
2-year contract.

the old att contracts are being migrated to the new att(cingular). In time
you will be mandated to make the change. I would expect that you are paying
extra right now for not moving. If you plan on using media net (cellular
internet) it would be worth it for you to make the change. Why not just get
with the times and upgrade the phone/contract/sim all at the same time?
cost is a little higher but more features and better quality make it worth
it!

Probably the opposite- AT&T had some pretty decent promotional plans
which are now "grandfathered." My cousin still has his $99 unlimited
AT&T GSM Charter plan that he says "Cingular will have to rip the phone
out of my cold dead hands" before he gives it up.

Again, unless he already has a better grandfathered plan.

Because dropping a good grandfathered plan means never getting it back!

Perhaps, perhaps not. Like with my cousin's, some plans are not be to
switched lightly!

I'm thinking of a 1-year contract.
My current phone doesn't ring at times and goes right into voicemail.
Usually around noon, and around 5pm (higher call activity on the
network?)
When I first got my phone (2-line family plan), my phone would start
up right, but the other phone would say "Emergency Calls Only".
Same phone model (X426), same network, same location, same time.
Weird.
And why does the phonebook take so long to initialize?
What is it doing?
Then I used to get dropped calls when I drive around this special hill
on the highway. Always!
I know what to expect from my current phone.
I hate to have more problems with the new phone or 3G SIM card.
The monthly service will be at least $10 more too (currently paying
$55 or $59 for family plan).
I don't use the cell phone a lot.
Lifetime timer on my X426: 52 hours in over 3 years.
