plenty of what's available at major retailers is also drek and plenty
that's available via shareware is not. different apps for different
needs.

it doesn't matter what the percentage is. if people find useful apps,
that's all that matters. whether you think those apps are drek is
completely irrelevant.

You ducked the point I made. Why am I not surprised.

Agreed, but then I'm not the one doing the silly boasting.

If the iPhone is really so impressive,
why do fans keep making excuses for it?

And 62 more downloadable apps than the iPhone had available its entire first
year on the market. How quickly we've forgotten that at one time "webapps
are all we'll need." ;)

Syncing PIM data via iTunes, in a word, sucks. I've set up my wife's iPhone
to use Google's Mobile Sync so it syncs automatically over the air. Syncing
via cable is so 1999.

I've never tried Nero Recode- how is it? Following a suggestion in the
iPhone NG, I tried Handbrake to convert to iPhone format. It does a
phenominal quality job converting to .mp4 or .m4v and is lightning quick
compared to most reencoders I've tried.

Not stellar, but pretty good, close to QuickTime Pro, which for only $30
is a good investment.

Free FFmpeg with the WinFF GUI <http://winff.org> does the best
conversions I know of. If you ever decide to give it a serious try, let
me know -- I've written some special profiles for mobiles.

lame as web apps may be, it was an interim solution. the sdk was
planned all along and it shows. plus, web apps are actually useful for
some things.

If you think facts are bashing, then you've got a siege mentality.

Thanks for the offer, but I'm a creature of habit. I've settled into using
Handbreak for iPhone/.mp4, TMPGenc for Zune/WinMo/.wmv (very easy and robust
clip, crop, audio volume, etc., editing features) and occasionally fire up
SUPER for anything "weird"- like Nintendo DS video. SUPER can do it all
itself, but it actually beat iTunes for my personal choice of most
counter-intuitive UI I've ever encountered. Solving a Rubik's Cube
blindfolded would be a less frustrating task than setting up SUPER properly
without forgetting to correct one of it's myriad of ridiculously pre-chosen
presets. (10 fps video? Who would choose that as a preset value in this
day and age? But my daughter will be watching High School Musical 2 in
jerkyvision on her NDS this weekend because I was in a hurry and didn't
create a new profile before ripping it last night for her scout camping trip
today!)

Agreed. While I love a good Apple bash as much as anyone, ;), I'm surprised
the very same tech press that bashed "webapps" when Apple announced it, is
praising Palm for developing an entire "revolutionary" OS around the
concept! Fair is fair-either webapps were "good enough" then, or not good
enough now. You can't have it both ways, unless the tech press is so
desperate for the "next" iPhone they'll heap praise on anything new to
create a buzz, (which seems more likely, since no one remembers the eternal
string of "iPhone killers" the press extolled the virtues of: the Instincts,
Voyagers, etc. are already wireless "footnotes."
