I can think of two general Bluetooth features....
#1 - have the Garmin GPS voice directions appear thru a Bluetooth headset
#2 - have the Garmin GPS POI screen info, with the telephone number, dial
the cellphone

also the Garmins can connect via bluetooth to the phone and broadcast
handsfree or through the car stereo speakers.

I thought that was already an option without having to use a phone?

you still need a phone. It's just an extension of bluetooth as a
remote headset/speaker or dialer to whatever phone is synced to it.

Verizon cripples their phones - and one of the ways is disabling some
of the bluetooth profiles, so that your Verizon phone won't be able to
communicate with your Garmin. It is possible to uncripple it via your
computer and a data cable -- but Verizon does not like you to do this.

worked fine with ours. Maybe it's phone specific.
