"Verizon Wireless now pays hundreds of millions in roaming charges every
year to Alltel, he estimated."
That was quoted from your URL. Your statement doesn't quite jibe with the
reality of the roaming....which Verizon has set to forbidden across SC in
the DEAD ZONES. Verizon doesn't roam on Alltel anywhere around here.
Their phones say NO SERVICE in areas where Alltel has full scale signals
and right under the Sprint PCS towers.
I can see one BIG deal for Verizon in SC.....Alltel has native 800 coverage
in MYRTLE BEACH VACATIONLAND....Verizon only has a little PCS carrier they
bought out up there and it sucks!

Man this all smacks of PAYOFF, doesn't it?
Well, I'll go somewhere else if it happens. I'll NEVER stand in line at
Verizon, again....

The agreement was reached and announced today.
Finalization by year end, pending regulatory approvals.
Everyone put it on your calendar for January 1: post a BIG welcome for
Larry!

Poor Larry.
It reminds me of when I left a job because the management was just so
horrible that I couldn't continue. I went to a new company, and within a
year, the two worst people at the previous company were president and VP
of the new company.

Not at my house (in Palo Alto, CA) unfortunately. Since the
other carriers have put in new towers in recent years while
Verizon has apparently done nothing, Verizon is now the
worst of the lot. Incoming calls go to voice mail if I
don't remember to leave the phone close to a window. T-Mobile,
which used to only work inside if I took the phone upstairs, is
now the best of them.

Unfortunately I don't think South Carolina is the point of this.
Verizon has spectrum there that they could build out if they
felt like it, and everyone knows Verizon is stingy about roaming
with their biggest competitors. Verizon's big holes are in rural
areas in the middle of the country, however, and Alltel fills in a
lot of those holes.
The New York Times says Verizon will be paying for the acquisition
with debt since Vodafone won't let them do anything which dilutes
Vodafone's interest. That being the case I wouldn't be surprised
if Verizon voluntarily divests themselves of overlapping licenses
to reduce the cost of the acquisition, so you may end up with a
choice of 800 MHz providers again when it is all over. Given the
likely acquiree, however, I'll bet you won't like the choice any
better than you like Verizon.
