Default Using a cell phone modem with Hyperterm

I have a Z6tv and want to use the internal modem to connect to a remote
VT100 terminal port.

I get results with some of the AT commands using Hypertrm, but I cannot get
the typical dial command "ATDT..." to work.

Is there a list of Motorola cell modem AT commands somewhere on the
Internet? As some of the typical AT commands do not work with this cell
modem.

Thanks.

David

Sorry guys, "ATX0" doesn't work. I still get "ERROR" when attempting to
dial.

before dialing? (may still be looking for a dial tone before you dial) or
can you actually dial but not negotiate a connection after dialing?

Now that I finally read your post more carefully, I'm confused.

You are trying to connect to a VT100 terminal port. What is a
"terminal port"? I haven't used a VT100 in many years, but I do
know that it's just a dump terminal used to communicate with
something else. What are you trying to communicate with?

If some AT commands aren't working, could you have mis-specified
the baud, data bits, parity, stop bits, or flow control for
whatever you are talking to?

This is interesting. Please explain.

Just reread it myself, does the op even have a modem at the vt100 connected
to a phone line? terminal ports are usually rs232 (used to be db25 then 9
then rj45, and who knows what now), are you trying to connect the cellphone
to the terminal with no modem or phone lines?

Default Using a cell phone modem with Hyperterm

This is not a handshake problem. It is a dialing problem. When you type
"ATDTxxxxxxxxxx" on a Hayes compatible modem, it dials. (where xxxxxxxxxx is
the telephone number)

Here's the story. I got rid of my land line. Now I can't use my old Zoom
2949L and Hyperterm to connect to the VT100 port anymore. So I am trying to
use the modem in my cell phone with Hyperterm. I have been using Hyperterm
with my land line to access this VT100 port for over 10 years without a
problem. Now I have only a cell phone and no land line.

As far as modems go, this should work. But when I type "ATDTxxxxxxxxxx" in
Hyperterm I immediately get "ERROR" as the response. This same command
worked fine with my land line and the Zoom modem.

I have tried typing ATX0 <CR> and get an "OK" followed by ATDTxxxxxxxxxx
<CR>, but just get ERROR in response.

Keep in mind that the cell modem does respond to some AT commands, but not
the one I need to dial out.

I just want to know what AT command I need to use to dial out...and one that
works with this cell phone.

Thanks again,

David

if all you want are the at commands, see
http://www.cellular.co.za/hayesat.htm

if however you want to make it work, there are several other things you have
to do....
a cell signal uses packets, and the data (voice or modem stuff) is
compressed down to fit in the bandwidth your packet/carrier/etc supports
(generically, even if you turn off carrier detect, you can probably only use
a max baud rate of 12 or 14,000, why you can't use a dial up modem with a
cell, but you can maybe get a fax to work since it usually only has a max
baud rate of 12000)

theres probably other stuff, but a ATF9 forces v.32 12,000 baud, not sure
what if anything x0 means, i only show x1 to x4
ATXn Extended Result codes

X1 Ignore dialtone and busy tone

X2 Ignore busy tone

X3 Inner dialtone

X4 Modem recognises dialtone and busy tone

X3 and X1 set the modem for Blind Dialing. This option is country specific,
because some countries do not allow blind dialing.

=========

however, you may want to try it a simpler way that wont require phone lines
or modems at all, and give you higher speed.....you didn't say if your vt100
has a db25 db9 or rs45 jack, but they make converters to usb connectors (ie
goes on the end of your vt100 to the modem cable instead of the modem, and
becomes a usb connection, then just plug it into your puter like one of
these
<http://www.tekcable.com/6ft-port-authority-usb-serial-db25-adapter.aspx>)

I forgot about the baud rate being an issue. However, the VT100 port can be
set for 9600. I'll have the IT guy set the remote port on the host for 9600.

Just FYI, the host is an old AlphaMicro running on Pick64+...not Windows,
and no USB ports. It has many serial ports connected to RS-232 dumb
terminals. All that has been done to allow for remote access is that a
RS-232 modem was used instead of a terminal to access the host. The host
uses a VT100 driver written for Pick64+. Yes, this is very old stuff...pre
90's. But the amazing thing is that it still works! My problem is trying to
get the new technology to work with the old... <sigh...> I appreciate you
trying to help. Thanks.
