yes, that's why the title of this post is: Micro Cell Tower - $40

The FCC hasn't remained silent! Under 47CFR Part 15 of the FCC Rules,
Unlicensed PCS operation has always been permitted. There are many
documents here:

Presuming the new MJ is priced simlar to the current, the $40 is for the
hardware and first year service. Subsequent years will be less. (The
current service is $20/years, or $60 for five years.)
I doubt the FCC is ever going to approve this thing, nor will MJ be able
to sell it for $40 even if the FCC does.
Also, what exactly is the point of using your cellphone to make free VoIP
calls at home when any $5 landline phone from WalMart already plugs into
a Magicjack? Free unlimited cellphone service at a stationary location
sort of defeats the purpose of having a _mobile_ phone!

It seems you are very misinformed and out of touch because there is
ubiquitous Wi-Fi in the US...

The last time I looked, a *wired* phone cost a fraction of the cost of a
cellular phone.

I can't figure out why they want to do it, either. GSM is hacked, leaving
the phone call open to anyone on GSM to MagicJack's box to listen. Skype
is secure, even on the little Skype phone which also uses 256-bit AES
encryption. CIA would take hours to find the key and by then the call
would be over. Monitoring Skype calls isn't going to happen, even with
today's computer monsters.
It's another sellphone novelty that will wear off when they realize the
computer has to run 24/7 to make it work, just like MagicJack's landline.
MJ needs to improve the box, however, to include whatever 3G the current
iPhone is capable of. They'll sell a lot of them to iPhoners stuck in EDGE
territory, most of the nation by a wide margin. That has a use for
iphones.

Wifi isn't the co-system used by the powerful CTIA political lobby run by
the sellphone carriers. That's the difference.
MJ's box steps on some very heavy toes, right in their shoes and will be
vigorously opposed by some really powerful lobby groups.....with money.

Not any more. Sellphone service on Verizon Wireless' towers currently
costs me 41.2c/month + 5.1c/minute ($3.06/hour). No wireline telco matches
Pageplus' rate structure on cellular for PHONE service.
Even the monthly services are cheaper. 1200 min + 1200 text/picture + 50MB
= $29.95 or Unlimited talk + text (no pictures) + 20MB = $39.95....no
taxes, no fees, no funny business. Landline can't compete.
Landline's days are over. The only reason they still buy it is that old
comfortable feeling of a phone in every room. They'll soon get over it.

I was talking about the purchase price of the telephone itself! I think
I paid something like $35 for a Western Electric 2500. I've had the
phone for more than 30 years. Those phones were built to LAST!

Even were that true, you'd still have to lug around a notebook and your
Magicjack as a portable "cell tower" to get your free calls. Since this
is still a VoIP service, what do you need the cellphone for? You could
just use a BT or wired headset with the laptop, like Oxford claims he
used to before Apple sold cellphones.
(Ever wonder if Oxford has been holding his bodily functions in all these
years waiting for Apple to market a toilet?)
