Broadcom won $19.6m today from Qualcomm, after a jury found the chip
design rival guilty of infringing three patents for cell phone
technology.
If the judge upholds the verdict, federal law allows Qualcomm to be
charged up to three times as much -- that's $58.8m -- for willfully
stepping on the IP's toes. Broadcom also seeks a permanent injunction
to bar Qualcomm from further infringing its wireless technology
patents. US District Judge James Selna has set a June 18 hearing date
to schedule post-trial motions.

That's the part that always pisses me off. If I lose in court with the
cops, I have to pay up or I'm not even going to get home! If IBM loses
5000 times what I make in a lifetime, they get to have a hearing by one
of their Illuminati Judge Buddies to see if HE is going to make what the
JURY already told them to do....PAY UP!
That sucks! Qualcomm needs to write the check or the CEO goes to JAIL.
THE JURY HAS SPOKEN!

Unfortunately for Broadcom, Qualcomm is free to appeal the decision.
Patent cases invariably take a very long time, and many appeals, before
a settlement is reached.

Apparently Broadcom can't beat them technically, so they use lawyers
to beat them into submission.

I agree -- rather than fining the company billions of dollars which
hurts the shareholders while managment coasts out on a "golden
parachute", the people in charge need to do some jail time.

Actually no, you have the right of appeal exactly the same as anyone else.

In fact this is all about Broadcom beating them technically, and
Qualcomm trying to cheat.

The US International Trade Commission has barred the import of new
cell phones that use chips made Qualcomm, following a legal
determination they infringe a patent held by competitor Broadcom.
The ban includes the import of Qualcomm chips and chipsets, but
doesn't affect handsets and PDAs on the market prior to today's
ruling, according to a news release issued by the federal agency. The
chips at issue are used in a variety of 3G phones such as those
operating on networks run by Verizon, Sprint, and AT&T.
The White House now has 60 days to approve or overturn the ruling,
according to the Associated Press. Qualcomm could settle the patent
dispute with Broadcom or could appeal today's decision to a federal
court.
