XV-6800 WiFi. Is it usable without a Verizon Data Plan, or do theysomehow prevent its use.
I'd be interested in getting the XV-6800, but using it on my current
plan with no data service. I only really care about WiFi usage. There's
enough free WiFi in the places I frequent that I can get by with no EV-DO.
Is there a way to ensure that it never connects via Verizon EV-DO and
starts charging me for data?

There's a charge for data over EVDO????
Why, then, do they advertise it at $59.99 a month unlimited??
Subject, of course, to the same warning about if you accumulate more
than 5GB of usage they may shut you down. And the only people using
5GB per month are pimply-faced teenagers down/uploading videos of
themselves jerking off.

Read your next sentence...

The "unlimited" part of it was dropped a while ago (after a court battle)

Yes. Most verizon phones have an option in settings to turn EVDO
completely off (which saves battery life)
You can have it connect to 1x only and use wifi (wifi is free if you can
find an open connection)

I only have experience with GSM WinMo PPC phones, not CDMA, but in all the
PPCs I've used (with and without phones), you can select what "network"
(WinMo calls a group of connection settings a "network" for whatever reason)
the device uses to connect to the internet or private networks in the
connections menu.
You could either delete the default Verizon cellular modem connections, or
create a new blank network without any cellular modem connections defined.
An empty network will use WiFi (or Bluetooth PAN) but no "modem" connections.
I have such a network setup on my HTC Wizard that I called "No GPRS" that
I switch to when roaming internationally to ensure I avoid the $15/MB T-Mo
charges for data roaming.
BTW, while I've got you on the line- do you happen to know if PagePlus
roams in Mexico? I know "officially" it doesn't, but my experience with
PagePlus so far seems to be that a lot of stuff slips through the cracks
(like free unlimited QNC data!) I wouldn't mind a $0.59/min phone in
Cancun next month vs. T-Mo's $1.49/min. My current plan is to forward my
cell to my Gizmo Project VoIP line, and use the VoIP client on my Wizard
(assuming the hotel's free WiFi doesn't block SIP VoIP, otherwise I'll have
to use Skype, which has lower quality on my 200MHz phone.)
Thanks in advance!

I don't know. I know it doesn't work in Canada (or it didn't last
February anyway).

I just checked my plan and talked with Verizon. I then talked with an
independent Verizon reseller who cuts through the crap one sometimes
hears from Verizon reps.
I use a Verizon EVDO connection via a USB720 modem and a Kyocera KR-1
router as my main Internet connection from my home -- which is in a
deep rural area. I am charged $59.99 a month no matter how much
bandwidth I use. The only exception is that Verizon says they may cut
off an account that uses over 5GB per month. The independent reseller
to whom I talked said, well, yes, he is aware of this limit but he
doesn't know anyone who has been cut off. My last month's usage as
1.1GB -- and that was heavy because of a major edit to one of the four
websites I maintain.
So -- maybe Verizon was forced to eliminate the word "unlimited" but
it seems to me that the $59.99 a month is, essentially, unlimited.
Of course, if you up/download lots of music, video, and the like,
that's another story.

There's Gizmo for the N800, Todd.....(c;

Isn't it ironic that the same ISPs that are telling you
you're downloads threaten their networks......
.....are testing 100Gbps TV to sell on the SAME systems?

I know- I've looked at the 800 a couple of times, but I think after years
of using WinMo devices, I'm not ready to buy into yet another "not quite a
real PC" format, particularly when the Eee PC and Intel's similar flash-
based mini-laptops running "real" Windows are within reach.
The nice thing about Gizmo, is they adhere to the SIP VoIP standard. The
nice thing about SIP is that one app can handle SIP, and you can simply
change profiles to select different accounts/services.
I don't need to run Gizmo software on my phone- I just need to drop their
server address, and my username and password into the SIP client already
built-in to the WM6 OS and anytime I fire up WiFi, I'm ready to receive
VoIP calls with the phone's regular phone app, so all of my Outlook
contacts etc. are already available. So whether you call my cell or my
VoIP number, my phone rings the same ringtone in the same phone app with
the same UI. For outgoing calls I tap the screen to toggle between VoIP
and cellular.

I expect that leaves Mexico out as well- oh well, thanks for your input.
Back to Gizmo, Voicestick and/or Skype over the hotel WiFi, I guess! ;-)
