Anyone using Verizon air card service extensively or exclusively for
internet connection?
I'm trying to decide if I should go with Verizon DSL for about $45
monthly with download speeds up to 3mbps. Verizon is offering monthly
service for $60 (but I'd get about 20% discount through my job), but
download speeds would be from 600 kbps to 1.4 mbps.
I'm looking at using one of these services exclusively as I can't
afford both. The pro of the air card is that I can use it anywhere, at
home, at the airport, at hotels when I travel for my job, etc. I'm
just a little worried about the download speed. I'm on a laptop right
now and the download speed varies from 400-1.3 mbps and it's kinda
annoying. The pro for DSL is that both of my laptops can go online at
the same (I plan to use WiFi) and that it would be faster.
I don't mind 400-800K speed while I'm at the airport, but would find
it annoying if I'm trying catch up on a Lost episode from abc.com
while I'm at home.
I'm also considering ATT's air card service (I have cell phone service
with both Verizon and ATT).

router on the boat. Works well. Coverage has been great around here in the
DC area and out on the Chesapeake.

I'm in DC metro area too. If possible, can you tell the difference
from your setup now compared to previous DSL/cable/T1 service? Are
you able to stream youtube/music/shows on your computer w/o too much
breakup? Thanks.

VZW specifically states that I can't use their Aircard as my primary or
only source of internet access?

If usage exceeds 5 GB per line during any billing period, we reserve the
right to reduce throughput speeds of any application that would otherwise
exceed such speed to a maximum of approximately 200 Kbps. These speeds are
subject to change, in our reasonable discretion, in order to address network
issues.

The sensible thing to do is try the cellular connection long enough to
see if you would be happy with it. Verizon gives you either 15 or 30
days to return the equipment and cancel the contract, no questions
asked. All you are risking is the cost of the service for as long as you
keep it.
I think you will find, though, that the slower speed and the much higher
latency will leave you dissatisfied with the cellular connection.
