Ok... this thing is supposed to be pretty fast in the primary digital
coverage areas, but how fast is it in the expanded network coverage areas?

I've been thinking that it would be really handy in my service truck and on
jobsites to be able to download manuals, check customer billing status,
connect to telemetry monitoring sites directly, demo some on-line services
for clients, etc.

Well, anyway. Exactly what services I need to connect to is not super
important. The connection speed is what is important. In my city/town we
have "expanded coverage area" only. The cell cards are supposed to work,
but at a slower speed.

Sorry, I just realized I forgot to say the provider I am looking at for this
is Verizon as I already have five phone swith them for my business, and I
could just add it to my existing plan.

Am I getting this right? A little more than twice optimum dial up speed?

Theoretically.

For web browsing, it is actually slower than dialup, because of the
latency (i.e., delays) between downloading each component of a web page.
For downloading files, I usually get 130-140 kbps, almost three times
the speed of typical dialup downloads.

Dial up is capped at 53 kbps. You're lucky if you get that. So closer
to three times.
